Don't you remember the enjoyment of reading as a kid and loving how it opened your imagination? That feeling is one like no other, and it can be provided through simply reading a book. Sadly, for some children, it isn't as simple. Many cannot obtain books, whether due to finance issues in the home or other reasons. They miss out on one of life's greatest and simplest joys. And furthermore, without books or anything else to read, they cannot further their english literacy skills. Many children who go without books struggle with poor vocabulary and grow up almost illiterate.

Why is this important?

Poor literacy affects many children in the immediate area and around the nation. Many children do not have access to books they need in order to develop literacy and reading comprehension skills necessary for life. They lag behind in school simply because they do not have books in their homes to help them grow. Children in impoverished areas suffer the worst from this. They attend schools that are already financially strained as it is, and the fact that they do not find many books in or out of school is a great cause for concern.

If we let this problem persist, we could let the future of America slip away. Literacy holds the keys to children's success, and from it they may develp critical thinking skills and other life skills.

What can we do?
